Symptoms and Clinical Context

Lyme disease may be associated with a spreading skin rash known as erythema migrans, often appearing around the site of a tick bite. Other early symptoms can include fatigue, fever, headache and muscle or joint pain.

In some cases, symptoms may develop later and involve the joints, nervous system or heart. Antibody testing should be interpreted together with exposure history, symptoms, timing of illness and other clinical findings.

Important Limitations

This test is intended as a screening tool and provides qualitative detection of IgG and IgM antibodies against Borrelia. It does not provide a quantitative antibody level and does not detect the bacteria directly.

The test should not be used as the only criterion for diagnosing Lyme disease. Results should be interpreted by healthcare professionals together with clinical history, tick exposure, symptoms and other relevant findings.

A negative result does not exclude Borrelia infection, especially if testing is performed early before antibodies have developed or if antibody levels are below the detectable limit of the test. Further assessment or additional testing may be needed when clinical suspicion remains.
